Deciphering Your Body's Language: A Path to Natural Nervous System Regulation

Have you ever found yourself squinting when outside in the sun, even on a cloudy day, or reaching for your sunglasses every time you step outside? Trust me; I've been there. Picture this: sunglasses perched on my nose, shielding my eyes from the slightest glimmer of sunlight. Yep, that was me, navigating the world with an over-the-top sensitivity to light.

But here's the kicker: it wasn't just about the brightness of the sun. It was about feeling overwhelmed by everyday stimuli, whether it was the hum of fluorescent lights or the cacophony of noise in a bustling cafe. My sensitivity to light was just one symptom of a larger issue: a dysregulated nervous system.

Whilst sunglasses definitely helped, they of course didn't get to the root of the problem. In fact, I didn't even realise there was a problem at the time, I thought it was just normal! (I have since learnt that common definitely does not equal normal!). It wasn't until I dove deeper into understanding my body's language that things began to shift, and I realised that I could live with out the sunnies!

Through addressing the seven fundamental pillars of health and embracing emotional healing, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and new understanding. It wasn't always easy – there were days when I stumbled, moments of frustration, but slowly and surely, I began to notice a change.

One day, I realised I'd left my sunglasses at home – and didn't miss them. The light no longer felt blinding; instead, it felt invigorating (I always picture myself as Wall-E charging up my batteries in the sun, it's bliss to me now!). It was a small victory, but it spoke volumes about the progress I'd made in regulating my nervous system.

Perhaps you've experienced something similar – whether it's light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, or another symptom that leaves you feeling off-kilter. These signs are your body's way of telling you that something isn't quite right.

While external aids like calming blankets and sunglasses offer temporary relief, they may not address the underlying issue. That's where understanding your body's language comes in. By becoming the observer of your body, you can cultivate the awareness of when your body is not working optimally and empower yourself to support its natural healing processes and regulate your nervous system.

Instead of relying solely on external interventions, consider practices that promote self-regulation and restore balance. Whether it's through mindfulness, breathwork, or somatic experiencing, there are countless ways to tune into your body's needs and respond accordingly. Learning what the fundamental pillars of health are and how to address them in your daily life is paramount to natural healing.
