Nervous System Regulation: Feeling Negative Emotions is Normal

Feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious? It’s time to understand that nervous system regulation doesn’t mean you’ll never feel negative emotions. It means you’ll be able to manage them in a way that leaves you feeling grounded, calm, and capable of making aligned choices for your life.

True nervous system regulation is the foundation for emotional wellness and long-term health. Chronic stress and dysregulation are linked to anxiety, depression, chronic pain, digestive issues, and even cardiovascular disease. When your nervous system is balanced, you build resilience, enhance your emotional bandwidth, and unlock the capacity to enjoy your daily life – even the mundane moments.

When you begin to regulate your nervous system, joy becomes more accessible. Small, everyday pleasures start to feel nourishing again. This isn’t a coincidence – it’s a positive feedback loop:

  • Regulating your nervous system brings more joy

  • Experiencing joy strengthens your regulation

What Is Nervous System Regulation?

Scientifically speaking, nervous system regulation refers to your autonomic nervous system (ANS) being able to move fluidly between two main states:

  • Sympathetic: The fight-or-flight response when faced with stress or danger

  • Parasympathetic: The rest-and-digest response that brings you back to calm

A regulated nervous system doesn’t stay in one state. It transitions harmoniously between both depending on your environment and needs.

A well-regulated nervous system looks like:

  • Resilience to stress without overwhelm

  • Emotional harmony without being controlled by your feelings

  • Fewer physical symptoms and better overall health

  • A calm, focused mind even in emotional moments

  • Clarity and contentment, making decisions from intuition rather than ego or trauma

How to Create Nervous System Regulation

There are two main approaches:

  • Addressing the Fundamental Pillars of Health

  • Consistent Emotional Release

Let’s unpack both.

The Fundamental Pillars of Health

There is no single product, supplement or practice that will regulate your nervous system long-term. While trendy tools can be helpful, they often replace simple, traditional ways of living. For example:

  • Supplements may substitute for seasonal, nutrient-dense wholefoods

  • Red light devices mimic natural sunlight and circadian rhythm exposure

  • Expensive water filters attempt to recreate the purity of spring water

These can support your journey if used in conjunction with lifestyle change. But they don’t replace the basics.

You don’t need to hit 100% in every area. A consistent 20% across all the pillars often brings more benefit than going all in on just one.

The fundamental pillars of health are:

  • Nutrition: Whole, seasonal, organic, unprocessed food

  • Hydration: Clean, quality water in the right amounts for your body

  • Movement: Gentle daily movement and diverse physical activity

  • Sleep & Rest: Deep sleep and restful breaks during the day

  • Sun & Light: Sunlight during the day, minimal blue light at night

  • Breath & Air: Nasal, diaphragmatic breathing that supports oxygenation

  • Connection: To self, nature, community and safe, loving relationships

These are the roots of regulation. Without them, your nervous system doesn’t feel safe enough to shift into healing mode.

The Power of Emotion Release

Beneath these pillars lies the foundation: emotional release. Without addressing the emotional load your body is carrying, no amount of supplements or clean eating will truly shift your state.

Emotion Release Technique (ERT) is a simple yet powerful tool to support this. By releasing stuck emotional patterns and beliefs, your nervous system has a chance to soften, recalibrate, and return to a place of internal safety.

When these two aspects work together – the physical pillars and the emotional work – transformation happens.

When It’s Simple But Not Easy

Most of these tools are simple. But simple doesn’t mean easy. They ask for presence. For repetition. For the willingness to face discomfort and resistance. And on the other side of that resistance? Regulation, energy, clarity, and wholeness.

You don’t need to do it alone.

If you want to go deeper into this journey, I invite you to join me inside the Upgrade Your Life with ERT Membership. It’s a space designed for nervous system regulation through gentle consistency.

Each week you’ll receive:
